More Precious than Gold

   SINAI – Mount of Decision

Mount Sinai

Mount Sinai

Who is like God?
Who is like God?
None is like You!
No one, no, none with
You can compare!

O Lord, we worship You.
Your goodness reaches to heaven above.
To the clouds, O Lord,
extends Your faithfulness,

Your righteousness
is like the mountains of God,
And Your compassion,
deep as the sea.

Who is like God?…

Over 3000 years ago a remarkable and unique event took place at Mount Sinai. It was an awesome revelation of God, intended not only for His people Israel but for all humanity. For the first time God clearly and fully made known His nature and will. What He said then was to be decisive for all generations on earth to the end of time.

God, who is eternal love, entrusted the holy Ten Commandments to His servant Moses. With these commandments He erected a wall against sin for the well-being and protection of humanity. Through His commandments God wants to give our lives a direction and entrust us with a mission. He wants to make us His faithful ones, who will stand the test in the end times.

During that all-important event at Mount Sinai God spoke words of everlasting value, words that no human mind could ever have conceived. When Moses had climbed up to the summit of Sinai, he was granted a holy and tremendous revelation of God (Exodus 19 and 20). The cherubim and seraphim may well have trembled with awe and worshiped at the thought that the almighty, holy God wanted to make known to mankind His will. So long as the world exists everything would depend on it being fulfilled: blessings or cursings, life or death (see Deut. 30:19 ESV). The destiny of individuals and of whole nations would from that time onwards hinge on their attitude towards God’s commandments.

No event of greater significance had occurred since man was expelled from paradise. What an awe-inspiring occasion that was when heaven opened up and mortal man was permitted to hear the voice of God! This is no silent God but One who reveals Himself to man in infinite love. There at Sinai He showed His character to mankind, especially in His proclamation to Moses: “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness” (Exodus 34:6 RSV). There is no other God. He is above comparison. When we consider this, are we not moved to fall down and worship Him?

We pray:

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts. Holy, holy, holy are You.

Great and everlasting God, who created all things out of nothing,

You came down upon Mount Sinai as the holy God
who reveals Himself.

Great and everlasting God, You alone are Lord.

You do not conceal Yourself;  nor are You silent.

Here at Sinai You made known Your will

and gave us Your commandments.

We worship You. We thank and adore You.

More Precious 1-08small Month of JuneA PRESENT FOR EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR

In this book we are offered a present for every day of the year – a gift from the Lord in the form of a Bible verse. Through His Word, God still speaks to us, challenging and encouraging us. We will be amazed to see the wide vari- ety of commands the Lord has given us in both the Old and New Testament, and how the Ten Commandments, given at Sinai, shine forth with renewed force in the New Testament. They reveal His heart to us. Without the commands of God, law and order brake down. Chaos is the result. In this apocalyptic age good and evil each take on distinct, recognizable features. In this final battle between light and darkness we are faced with an either-or situation. Either we belong to God and His followers, who consider His commands as binding. Or else we belong to the lawless one, whose followers discard them as irrelevant.

At a time when apostasy and blasphemy are rife, may we respond to God’s love, honouring Him in everyday life by keeping His commands. This actually helps to curb the powers of darkness that are so active in our times. Something of God’s rule of love will become visible among us. In keeping with the Bible’s promises, we will find happiness. Fullness of life – joy, peace and love – will be ours. What a wonderful gift God is offering us in His commands – more precious than gold.

In Praise of God’s Laws

I love your commandments more than gold, more than fine gold.
I direct my steps by all your precepts.
Your decrees are wonderful; therefore my soul keeps them.
Your statutes have been my songs wherever I make my home.
I love your law. I rejoice at your word.
Your commandments are my delight.
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

From Psalm 119 NRS
